What is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the body is a self-regulating and self-healing organism, controlled by the nervous system which consists of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The spinal column, which protects the nervous system, when out of correct position or is functioning improperly, causes malfunction of the various parts of the body, tissues, and organs.

Chiropractic medicine is a form of natural health care which focuses on treating the patient without the use of drugs or medication. Doctors of Chiropractic are recognized as primary health care providers. Millions of people throughout the world see chiropractors for all types of illnesses and musculoskeletal conditions including but not limited to headaches, neck pain, low back pain, sciatica and joint pain. Chiropractors also specialize in treating patients with spinal disc conditions, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains and strains.

Subluxation

Subluxation is a term used by chiropractors to describe what happens when one of the vertebrae in your spine moves out of place. The word subluxation comes from the Latin words sub (slight) and luxate (dislocate). When there is a slight dislocation of the vertebrae in the spinal column, there is a slight build up of pressure and stress on the joints, spinal nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding muscles and tissue. As time passes with an uncorrected subluxation, the damage to the nerve gets worse and creates problems to the areas where that nerve is connected.

Subluxations are caused by many different ways, A motor vehicle accident, sudden jar or fall, trauma, improper bending and lifting and sometimes simple daily activities such as poor posture or sleeping position.

Chiropractors are trained to use their hands and other diagnostic approaches such as x-ray to find and correct subluxations and other misalignments. The adjustment is done manually and in most cases will be done by applying corrective pressure to the spine in a very specific direction and location. This will help restore the correct alignment and function of the vertebrae of the spine and also the various joints of the body including all the small articulations of the upper and lower extremities. Most chiropractic adjustments under normal circumstances are painless. Some discomfort may be experienced in cases of car accident and trauma due to inflammation.
